It is ironic that these whales are known as friendly, when they were anything but when hunted by whalers. Hunting other species of whales it was common practice to harpoon a whale calf to keep the rest of the pod around trying to protect the calf which afforded the whalers the opportunity to take more animals. When this technique was tried with Gray Whales, the mothers charged the whale boats, often destroying boat and crew. That these same mothers allow, even encourage, their calves to have intimate contact with humans is truly amazing.
